Magnetic locks are an excellent way to secure a door. While the lock is given power, it secures the door in place. A complete magnetic lock system is comprised of at least 3 components: the magnetic lock, access control, and exit switch. The magnetic lock contains 2 major parts: the electromagnetic locking mechanism and the metal bar that connects to door handle. When power is provided to the locking mechanism, it holds the metal bar in place. The access control includes the numeric key panel and HID key cards. The exit switch is placed inside of the room that the lock provides access to, and allows individuals to open the door to leave the room.

There are two major magnetic lock types: fail safe and fail secure. When fail safe locks lose power, such as due to a power outage, the door becomes unlocked. This type of lock is useful in situations where it is important for people to be able to leave the area, such as for safety reasons. Fail safe locks, on the other hand, act the opposite when a power outage occurs. Since there is no power for the electromagnetic locking mechanism, a physical obstruction is put in place to prevent the door from opening. This type of lock is useful in situations where security is important, and where access should be limited even when there is no power. For example, fail secure locks might be employed in a bank.
